Best Financial District Cafes
30 January 2023

For upwards of a billion people across the planet, coffee is a staple—and sometimes the best part—of the day. For many daily java drinkers, coffee is truly a magical elixir. It readies us to wake up for the day and stay alert and is the perfect beverage to enjoy with dessert or to sip while catching up with a friend. During summer months, nothing beats a cold brew, while a steaming-hot cup of coffee is the perfect antidote for a frosty winter day. Whatever the season, coffee-loving residents of One Wall Street can savor a cup at one of the nearby cafes in their historic Downtown neighborhood, prepared with flair by a talented crew of local baristas and perfectly paired with a delectable baked good.

Located in Brookfield Place, Cafe District is one of the neighborhood’s stalwarts for expertly crafted espresso drinks, including the gloriously decadent Nutella Latte. In addition to these coffee offerings, the larger marketplace includes a patisserie serving up classic French delights—from pastries and chocolates to macarons. For a heartier option, patrons can pick up a sandwich on a perfectly chewy baguette or a sweet or savory crepe.

At nearby 787 Coffee, guests are guaranteed to taste some of the freshest coffee around. This cafe specializes in Puerto Rican beans from their farm in the mountains of Maricao, Puerto Rico, where their coffee trees are sustainably planted and grown without environmentally harmful pesticides. Their beans, which are shipped twice weekly, can also be purchased to enjoy from the comforts of home.

A quintessentially New York institution, Cafe Grumpy is probably best known as the place to go for a perfectly brewed cup of coffee in hip surroundings. The location on Stone Street offers a full espresso, coffee, and tea menu, as well as a collection of pastries, with seating available as well to sip a warm drink while taking refuge from the cold. The decor is also a sophisticated mix of natural materials and warm lighting, which preserves the grand scale and details of the original building.

Finally, 10,000 Coffee, so-called from the oft-repeated rule that it takes 10,000 hours to achieve expertise—namely, crafting the perfect cup of specialty coffee. The must-try specialty coffees include the Einspanner, a traditional Viennese coffee, the Caramel Café Latte, as well as the Jeju Green Tangerine Matcha. Not to be outdone, their specialty pastries, like their blueberry crème cheese and coconut crème croissants, are worth the trip alone to this chicly designed cafe.

Whether it’s for a midafternoon break or an indulgent weekend treat during a walk in the neighborhood, each of these cafes offers One Wall Street residents plenty of skillfully crafted drinks, pastries, and experiences for keeping warm and fully caffeinated all winter long. For those looking for something closer to home, the One Club bar or Whole Foods downstairs also offers a variety of caffeinated drinks that will satisfy your cravings.
